You know those parents you can’t help but love to hate? The ones who overdo kid birthdays with their Pinterest perfect parties? Well, that’s always been me! But I promise you’ll soon love me when I share our story and an Easy Birthday hack from Netflix! You’re Welcome!
Birthdays are a BIG Deal – especially around our house!
I really had no choice but to make birthdays a HUGE deal at our house. The universe made me do it when it lined up a ‘What are the Odds?’ element the birthday celebrations around our house.
First, I thought it was some kind of crazy when I married a fella with the same birthday as me. No Way, Right?!
Hold your hats folks, here comes the kicker:
10 years ago my husband and I received one serious birthday present when our twin boys were born on our birthday. That’s right – FOUR OF US share the same birthday!!
It is a big deal when twins turn 1 year old and I had made it through that year with 3 wee ones under 2 years old! Of course we celebrated HUGE for their first birthday! When the confetti settled, we decided we needed to throw another GREAT party for our then 3 year big sister because her birthday needed to be a big deal too. She deserved to feel just as special on her day.
After that, it *maybe* kind of snowballed into the somewhat ridiculous. We held huge birthday parties with 100+ people. We threw elaborate whatever-character-they-are-into-at-the-moment themed birthday parties where everyone dressed up in costumes and played fun and (of course) perfectly planned games. One birthday, all the guests even won their ‘loot’ at Pirate themed Carnival style activity stations.
I loved every one of those outrageous parties!
If I’m being honest, I loved the parties afterward. The stress of getting a Pinterest perfect birthday party together pretty much had me losing my noodle every single time.
I’m not alone. Two-thirds of parents (67%) globally agree that birthday planning is stressful.
Make a Birthday Special – without the Stress!
While I have no immediate plans to give up the streamers and over the top birthday celebrations completely, there has to be a way to make a kid feel special without all the Pomp and Splendour. And the stress.
Now that my kids are getting a little older, things are changing a lot with birthdays. To start with, our birthday happens during summer holidays. For lots of kids, a birthday party isn’t even likely to take place on their actual birthday. They kids like to wait until school starts again or the weekend until their friends are around for a party.
We may even be done with parties now that they have entered into Middle School. *Gasp*
What the heck do I do on their birthday(s) to make it feel special without putting in heroic effort?
Netflix makes Birthdays Easy!
Netflix knows parents feel a lot of pressure to plan the perfect birthday for their kids, but not every parent has the time, money, or interest in staying up all night crafting party favors or baking the perfect Star Wars themed cake. While many parents admit to feeling social-media fueled pressure to give their kids a huge party (44%), most wish they didn’t have to go Pinterest-crazy to give their kids a good time (69%).
Don’t forget there are still four of us who share a birthday. If you are a math whiz, I really do want to know the odds of this happening. We have thought a lot about this – I mean, it happens every year. How does the fact that it is twins factor in mathematically? Do you count the brothers as two birthdays? Or one pregnancy? Technically, twins are still born on different days. Does having 4 out of 5 family members share the day come into play? We are pretty sure this has negatively affected our chances at winning the lotto. I know, I digress. Squirrel!
Anyway, my point is that it’s my birthday too! No one wants to work hard on their birthday so I could definitely use a way to make it easy for me.
Well, happy birthday to me. (And to you, mom and dad.) This month, Netflix is making kids’ birthdays a piece of cake – no Pinning or Scrapbooking required!
Netflix Birthdays On-Demand
Netflix is helping parents take their kid’s birthday to the next level by launching 14 Birthdays On-Demand, where characters from LEGO Ninjago, Luna Petunia, Beat Bugs and more help make birthday celebrations a piece of cake. With this new hack, parents can simply press play and kids’ favorite characters will sing them a special birthday greeting – made just for them! (Okay, Okay. Maybe it wasn’t made just for them but they may think it was!)
This summer, Netflix offered me and other members of the Stream Team an early sneak peek and Pokemon and Pikachu sang Happy Birthday to my boys. It got that OMG reaction from them that assured me that, even without going over the top, it was a birthday they would remember. #Nailedit #Winning
Just searching “birthday” on Netflix will unlock a special performance from kids’ favorite characters, including DreamWorks All Hail King Julien, Barbie, Beat Bugs, DreamWorks Dinotrux, Las Leyendas, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, Luna Petunia, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug* and Cat Noir, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Pokemon, Project Mc2, Skylanders Academy, DreamWorks Trollhunters and Word Party.
Go Ahead and cancel the Princess. Kids may be the ones wearing the crown on their birthdays but Netflix has given me and other parents a brilliant and easy Birthday hack so we can be the real heroes on the big day.
Disclosure: I am so darn happy to be a part of the Netflix Stream Team! #Netflix #StreamTeam #sponsored. I receive promotional items and a Netflix subscription in order to find great content that I can share with YOU. As always, all opinions are my own.
But really, who doesn’t love Netflix?
