As parents, we strive to create future opportunities for our children. To prepare them for what’s coming next: Next fight with a friend; Next team loss; Next exam; Next grade; Next course; Next school…but Next Step in planning a Career for the Future? Will they be competing with Robots for jobs?
A lot has changed since both my husband and I remember taking computer science, struggling to learn basic code for simple commands like < ENTER> some time around middle school. Now, I see toddlers in strollers able to navigate an iPad with lightening speed. In fact, my elementary school aged children are sometimes who I turn to for help with my tech devices!
But guess what? It is still my job as a parent to prepare my children for the jobs of the future because the careers that our children have will be very different then those around today. (Click FUTURE CAREERS to read more about future jobs.) It’s time to teach our children how to use technology to their benefit. And I’m going to need a little help with this one.
CST Learning Project Competition
Our friends over at Canadian Scholarship Trust understand this. They just launched their annual CST Learning Project competition which funds new learning activities for children with $250,000 up for grabs. (They take the future seriously). It’s part of their cool Inspired Minds program that also includes Careers 2030 – a deep dive into the possible careers our kids will have. (Robot Counsellor? Data Miner? Rewilder?)
