Big Dreams for Small Changes: Setting Intention
Intention Setting is still all the buzz as we enter a new year. In setting Intention, aiming to “call a dream toward us” can be very spiritual in nature. It has been explained like shooting an arrow into the universe, focusing on the target rather than the flight path.
Setting our Intention word as KIND did help our family to remain focused on being KIND to one another. (Click HERE to read more about our Intention Setting and why it felt like this method was still missing a step for us.) It identified a shared priority, provided a framework to think about our actions, and a common language to use. Looking back, I can say our family made some gains using the popular method.
There is clearly more work to be done. There is still fighting and constant policing between siblings. And the yelling continues. (Which isn’t always just the kids!)
So, this year’s new family games and books included selections that continued to focus on kindnesss and cooperation. Our annual group gift included some of our first cooperative games like Pandemic and LockRoom where everyone must work together to succeed. There are a lot of skills we hope to build on while having fun together.
While our 2018 Intention word remains KIND, we are also spreading our kindness to reach further outward than our immediate family.
Small Acts of Kindness can have Big Impact
Our entire family read and loved the book Wonder by RJ Palacio. It’s an uplifting story with characters that evoke strong emotion and inspire us all to choose to act with kindness and love. Personal copies for each child of Wonder: Do One Wonderful Thing Every Day. choose kind Journal were chosen with care to encourage our kids to think about ways to be kind.
The daily prompts remind us that a small act like sharing a smile – or a Toonie – can spread like glitter and make a large impact on the people around us.
Nourish Your Neighbourhood: Teeny Toonies Fill Tummies
Your small change can have large impact thanks to the Toonies for Tummies program. Over 1.1M children stand to benefit from this important campaign which supports healthy breakfasts and snacks at school.
It’s no surprise that nutrition is linked to positive learning outcomes. Breakfast is very important to my children’s success at school every day. Their Neurodiverse brains already struggle with attention and their medications can sometimes suppress their appetites later in the day. For children who are hungry, Student Nutrition Programs are a way to get the nutrition they need.
No child in Canada deserves to be hungry. But far too many are.
Thanks to your donation, along with the support of numerous retailers and sponsors behind The Grocery Foundation’s Toonies for Tummies, we are spreading kindness – and Toonies – ‘like glitter’ and helping to change these statistics together.

Help spread the word online on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Join in the fun when you use the #Toonies4Tummies hashtag.
Toonies for Tummies is a grassroots program that brings together retailers and sponsors from Canada’s grocery, food, and consumer goods industry – all supporting one cause.
The Grocery Foundation is able to ensure 100% of funds collected return to Student Nutrition Programs because the (19) sponsors and the participating retailers cover the cost of the campaign. The Grocery Foundation works with program partners, including Breakfast Club of Canada in western Canada and the Ontario Student Nutrition Program Network (Ontario), to identify eligible school-based student nutrition programs. These programs benefit from donations made in-store and online once the campaign ends. Many thanks to all of the sponsors and retailers involved – we couldn’t do it without them.
Your Donation to Toonies for Tummies will directly help kids in your local community. 100% of donations remain in the community where they are donated.
Cityline will match donations if you donate online on or before January 18th on the Cityline contest page, which also includes a chance to win two tickets to attend the ‘Night to Nurture’ gala. Specific retailers are also holding a Match Funds donation day at their stores. Follow @groceryfndtn to find out the Match Funds day per retailer.
