To maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, you must first find a way of eating and exercising that you will find most beneficial – as well as manageable.

The best diet for you and your family isn’t always the latest and greatest of the day. It is the one you can stick to in the long run.

Set Yourself up to Win

When there are limited options available, you will find yourself eating whatever is quick and easy – which is usually processed junk. 

To maintain a healthy diet, you have to set yourself up to win. And that takes Planning.

Purge: Get unhealthy foods out of the housefood, junk, junk food, choice, unhealthy, diet, health, wellness, maintain a healthy diet

Do yourself a favour and get rid all of all the junk food. Don’t keep unhealthy choices in the house. This is hard but I promise it gets easier.

Or maybe it won’t. But you can’t just reach for it if it’s not there

Limit your sugar intake.

Sugar is addictive, causes us to confuse food cravings with hunger, and encourages unhealthy snacking.

Instead, try to choose nutritious foods that will keep you full longer.

For most of us, #thestruggleisreal. I tend to make bad choices when the fresh fruits and vegetables run out. 

Those real food predicaments are the nights when it is almost dinner and you haven’t yet figured out what to eat.

It’s somehow related to basic math: the effort it takes to eat healthy is far greater than my motivation at that given moment. Suddenly just jumping into the car to go to the store seems heroic in scale and more than I can muster.

To combat this negative equation, our family keeps our favourites readily available.

When we get a snack craving, there is always fruit on the counter. Hard boiled eggs, cheese, Greek yogurt, bags of veggies, and hummus are found in the fridge. Roasted chick peas and nuts are a healthy option we keep on hand in the pantry. And we always have gluten free pasta and a jar of our favourite sauce well stocked.

Just in case.

 

Prep Ahead of Time

This will not only help you maintain a healthy diet, but it will help you stay on budget as well. By planning meals before you go to the store, you are more likely to only get necessary items.

Avoid shopping on an empty stomach. You will be more likely to impulse buy that way.

Pair it up

When you make both dietary and physical activity changes at the same time, the results tend to reinforce each other – making you better able to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Another pairing option to maintain your healthy diet is to find a buddy – or a tribe – with similar goals. In his book Whole Life Fitness Manifesto, Lifestyle and Fitness coach Dai Manuel believes “whole life awesomeness” is best achieved through human connection.  He recommends finding an ‘Account-a-buddy’ – someone to hold you accountable – and brings together a tribe that strives to “encourage and support each other to be the happiest, healthiest versions of ourselves.”

Which certainly sounds like winning to me.

Pack Healthy Snacks


Sticking to a healthy diet can be tough when you’re away from home for extended periods of time. 

When you get too hungry, you may end up grabbing whatever is available. And that is most often processed food.

To avoid this common pitfall, bring a cooler and fill it with healthy, homemade food when travelling or away from home for some time.

Some examples of good, portable snacks are fruits, protein bars, and nuts. Other healthy snack ideas that can be packed well ahead: homemade trail mix, jerky, and dried fruit.
Having healthy snacks on hand helps to maintain a healthy diet and keep your appetite in check until you’re able to have a full meal.

So, bottom line on how to maintain a healthy diet? Plan Ahead.

Purge. Provide, Prep, and Pack your favourite healthy foods and recipes. Pair up with Your Tribe; the websites, authors, companies, or experts who share your health and wellness goals. 

 

Of course, there are always those unexpected pitfalls that you can’t anticipate. Or can you?
